BHP builds new supply links to advance decarbonisation

BHP group procurement officer Rashpal Bhatti says the mining major’s work with leading Chinese vehicle battery technology companies can help advance it towards its operational emission reduction goals.
The company has signed memoranda of understanding with BYD Group unit FinDreams Battery Co and Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Limited, or CATL. Bhatti said BHP was investigating battery solutions for mining equipment and locomotives as well as rapid charging infrastructure and battery recycling options. It was looking at BYD commercial vehicles and light vehicles for mine use and examining CATL energy storage systems.
“By joining forces with industry leaders [such as BYD and CATL] we are seeking solutions to help shape a more productive and more sustainable resources industry of the future,” said Bhatti, a keynote speaker at the upcoming IMARC 2025 conference in Sydney, Australia.
The event’s extensive program has global experts addressing industry efforts to strengthen supply chains in the face of trade dislocation and sanctions and also build and operate greener, safer mines.
Bhatti said BHP recognised the need for innovative solutions to tackle scopes one and two emissions, aligned with its long-term goal to achieve net zero operational greenhouse gas emissions.
“BYD is a leader in their field and at the cutting-edge of what’s possible in battery technology and advanced manufacturing and have already made significant progress with electric vehicles,” he said.
“CATL is a global leader in advanced battery technology, energy storage solutions and battery recycling and is a natural partner for BHP.”
FinDreams general manager of global commercial vehicle business, Jack Li, said the BHP MoU was a key milestone for the company, “not only for FDB’s commitment to advancing the low-carbon revolution but also for accelerating decarbonisation across the global resources sector”.
“We recognise BHP as a true industry leader with an aspirational vision to achieve net-zero operational greenhouse gas emissions – a strategy that aligns with our mission.
“Leveraging our unique expertise in mining electrification, I am confident this collaboration will drive transformative change, paving the way for a more sustainable future for all.”
BHP says the collaboration with CATL will also focus on opportunities to advance the circular economy by enhancing battery recycling processes, “especially leveraging our copper operations to establish more sustainable value chains within the mining sector”.
CATL head of overseas business, Tan Libin said the company wanted to demonstrate how advanced battery technologies could decarbonise mines, logistics and product delivery.
