Golden year for mining deals

There’s no shortage of candidates for this year’s Resourcing Tomorrow Mining Deal of the Year Award, as our review of nearly US$71 billion worth of transactions over the past 12 months shows. The analysis also reveals the top global financial and legal advisers for the period.
The review by Mining Beacon of company acquisitions (26 significant deals), asset purchases (20), equity financings (14), debt financings (four) and royalty/streaming and prepayment deals (two) shows gold has not surprisingly dominated deal flow, with the yellow metal being the focus of 36 of the transactions.
Copper also figured prominently in 12 deals while lithium (eight), rare earths (three), aluminium and coal (two), and phosphate and iron ore (one each) were targeted.
Canada and Australia led the way with 17 transactions each being led by companies or focused on assets in these countries, while 11 deals were US-centric. Latin America also featured heavily with eight deals while Saudi Arabia’s rise to mining and metals prominence continues with three transactions.
The Mining Beacon data shows about 70 law firms advised on buy and sell side mining/metals M&A and financing transactions in the past 12 months, along with more than 50 banks and investment firms.
The top law firms in the mining and metals advisory space in the period were Cassels (13 transactions), Stikeman Elliott (8), McCarthy Tetrault (6) and Bennett Jones (6), and Corrs Chambers Westgarth (5).
Leading the way in the M&A/financing advisory arena were: BMO (10 deals), Macquarie Capital (6) and Goldman Sachs (6), Scotiabank (5) and RBC Capital Markets (5).
Resourcing Tomorrow’s prestigious annual Mining Deal of the Year Award recognises the top deals done between 1 October 2024 and 30 September 2025.
