Resourcing Tomorrow Hong Kong Debut Closes, Signalling a Defining Shift in Global Resources
- 20 April 2026
The inaugural Resourcing Tomorrow Hong Kong has come to a close, but the structural shift it reflects across the global resources sector is only gaining pace.
Taking place last week and welcoming over 250 senior leaders from mining, finance, government and industry, the event examined the forces reshaping the sector, with Asia firmly at the centre of that momentum.
Opening perspectives from Dr Honourable Moses Cheng, Chairman of the Hong Kong Maritime and Port Development Board, and Raymond Cheung, Chief Operating Officer at BYD (H.K.), set the tone for the programme. Both highlighted Hong Kong’s growing role not only as a leading mining finance centre, but also as an emerging gold trading hub. With plans to expand warehousing capacity and reduce commodity trading taxes by 50%, Hong Kong is positioning itself as a critical gateway between global resource assets and Asian capital.
Across the programme, discussions reflected a sector in transition. From mining finance and M&A activity to the future of gold markets, critical minerals and sustainability, speakers explored how capital flows, geopolitical pressures and technological change are redefining the industry.
Senior government and industry voices, including Joseph H. L. Chan, JP, Under Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, and Johnson Chui, Head of Global Issuer Services at Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited, reinforced Hong Kong’s growing influence in global capital market, given the recent listings of the like of Zijin and CATL. Sessions examined the rise in mining and metals listings, the evolving financing landscape, and the increasing appetite from Asian investors for exposure to resources and energy transition materials.
Panel discussions addressed some of the most pressing challenges facing the sector, including the consolidation race in mining M&A, shifting investor expectations, and the ongoing difficulty of unlocking financing for development-stage projects. The role of ESG and sustainability in capital allocation remained a central theme, alongside discussions on gold markets amid geopolitical uncertainty and the realities behind critical minerals demand.
The programme also highlighted the growing importance of supply chain resilience, digitalisation and Asia’s role in linking upstream resource development with downstream processing and manufacturing.
The Mining Pitch Battle brought a competitive close to the formal agenda, with companies presenting to a panel of leading investors. Congratulations to winners Gateway Mining, Borealis Mining, Finders Energy and Celsius Resources
The evening networking reception, attended by senior industry figures including Guest of Honour Gareth Williams, Consul-General for Australia in Hong Kong, continued discussions well beyond the stage, with deal-making and partnership conversations extending into the evening.
With strong participation from across the global resources value chain, Resourcing Tomorrow Hong Kong has established itself as a key meeting point for the industry, reflecting both the scale of opportunity in the region and the pace at which Asia’s role in global resources continues to expand.
